What we're learning in our Foods I classes:

  • Identifying food customs, trends, and the factors that affect our food choices
  • Interpreting the relationship between nutrition and health
  • Describing safety and sanitation procedures in the kitchen
  • Explaining the organization and management of kitchens and resources
  • Using recipes, including measurements, conversions, cooking terminology, and following recipe directions
  • Demonstrating basic mixing procedures, like the ones used to make cakes, muffins, and breads
  • Selecting and preparing Pyramid foods, like grains, fruits, vegetables, eggs, dairy, and meats
  • Understanding meal management- stretching the food dollar and work simplification
  • Planning menus to incorpororate elements of nutrition, flavor, and visual appeal
  • Establishing a dining atmosphere- table setting, meal service, table etiquette
