ESL Program Information:
Asheboro High School offers three types of English as a Second Language (ESL) services: Traditional ESL classes, Sheltered English Instruction, and a Co-Teaching model in Integrated Math I, Biology, and Civics/Economics.
Our ESL Teachers:
Mr. Juan Rios teaches a traditional ESL class designed to help newcomers who speak very little or no English to develop the language skills that are necessary to succeed in their core classes. He also co-teaches Civics and Economics in Grade 10.
Mr. Graham Helsabeck co-teaches Biology and Civics/Economics in Grade 10 as well. He also teaches ESL III, a Study Skills course that serves as an interactive invironment in which students can ask questions about any of their classes with an emphasis on writing skills.
I teach a Sheltered English class in Grade 9, which is a course designed to help English Language Learners access the English I curriculum drawing heavily on their native language (Spanish) and differentiating instruction to best meet their needs. I also co-teach Integrated Math I in Grade 9.
