GEAR-UP Field Trip Summary
The Nova Academy and the Alternative School were recipients of the GEAR-UP Grant. GEAR-UP mission is to encourage students to pursue a college education, particularly students who may not be considering college because of financial reasons or lack of parental encouragement. On Thursday, April 7, 2011, our groups went on a field trip to North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in Greensboro, NC. Twenty students learned of the opportunities available at the university including admissions criteria, majors, student organizations and the rich history of the University. Student then experienced a tour of the campus learning about the dorms, campus recreation, academic buildings and the student lounge. Students further observed the statue of the famous “Greensboro four”. On February 1, 1960, four A&T students sat at a Woolworth’s lunch counter and ignited the Sit- In Movement of the 1960’s. This ten foot tall statue shows the four students standing for equality for mankind. Lastly, students enjoyed a buffet-style lunch while engaging in fellowship and reflection of their experiences. Overall, this field trip allowed our students to both explore and be exposed to college life and opportunities after high school graduation.
