Introduction to AFJROTC
AFJROTC SYLLABUS
The overall mission of the AFJROTC Program is to develop citizens of character dedicated to serving their nation and community. AFJROTC is a blend of science, social science, technical course work, training in drill and ceremonies, and the elements of leadership and management. Under the block course schedule, cadets receive one elective credit for each semester of AFJROTC. The program is two-phased, consisting of Aerospace Science and Leadership Education.
Aerospace Science study includes the history of aviation, cultural studies of major world regions, science of flight, , exploring space, and management. Through cultural studies, students learn to see their world through many different perspectives. They learn to explore and discover the processes that shape the earth, the relationships between people and the environment, and the links between people and places. Leadership Education offers students many opportunities to shape their character. Students learn about character development while many character-building topics are discussed. Elements of good citizenship are instilled in students. They are introduced to the Air Force organizational structure, uniform wear, military customs and courtesies, flag etiquette, citizenship in the United States, first aid, health and wellness, fitness, individual self-control, basic drill and ceremonies, effective communications, they learn how to listen and think critically, how to prepare for leadership, how to build personal awareness, key elements of building and encouraging effective teams, key behaviors for becoming a credible and competent leader, the importance of charting a career path, specific career options, how to create a personal budget and financial plan, how to write a resume, how to interview for a job, how to apply for college, the importance of management, making decisions, and problem solving, human relations and life skills. They learn about the defense structure of the United States and current Air Force issues.
To reinforce what is learned in the classroom, cadets participate in many outside activities such as field trips to military bases, aerospace facilities and industries, museums, and civilian airports. Cadets also participate in parades, summer leadership schools, drill team competitions, military balls, honorary academic groups, and other community activities.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS/EXPECTATIONS
UNIFORM WEAR/PERSONAL GROOMING – Wearing the AFJROTC uniform is required at least one day each week – ordinarily on Tuesday, unless otherwise directed by the instructors. Cadets are required to meet the grooming standards specified in the cadet guide in accordance with Air Force regulations.
CADET HONOR CODE – Cadets are required to comply with and reflect the values, behavior, and expectations specified in the Cadet Honor Code located it the Cadet Guide.
CADET GUIDE – Cadets are required to actively participate in the AFJROTC Physical Fitness Training program.
TESTING
Testing usually consists of closed book chapter tests, announced at least one week in advance. Interim quizzes/tests on each lesson may be open or closed-book, and may be announced or unannounced. Semester examinations are closed book. Uniform inspection conducted each week is counted as a test grade. Physical fitness tests will be administered periodically, and will count as test grades.
GRADING PROCEDURES:
a. Classroom/Homework Assignments, Quizzes, Tests 60%
b. Physical Fitness/Wellness (E2C) 20%
c. Uniform Wear and Inspection 15%
d. Attitude, Discipline, Participation 5%
e. Merit/Demerits and Extra Credit - Extra Credit is awarded for many extra-curricular, voluntary activities. Demerits are levied by cadet staff officers of instructors for violations of the Cadet Honor Code or established JROTC procedures.
