What is the 1:1 Learning Initiative?
Asheboro City schools received an IMPACT grant in February 2008 for AHS, NAMS, and SAMS. The IMPACT model has the focus of collaboration among teacher, technology facilitators, and media coordinators in a technology rich environment to improve teaching and learning. In September 2009, AHS, NAMS, and SAMS were notified of continuation of IMPACT funding. One stipulation of the grant was to implement a 1:1 program at AHS.
What is 1:1 learning?
By definition, 1:1 learning involves one student, one computer, one interactive, personalized learning experience in a wireless environment with anytime access to the Internet. In schools, 1:1 programs cover a gamut of configurations from mobile carts in classrooms for school use only to laptops checked out to students for home use.

What is the operating system?
Windows 7
What software will be on the laptops?
Some of the primary programs are:
• Microsoft Office 2010
• Audacity
• Movie Maker
• Google Earth
• GIMP
• Internet Explorer
Many web-based applications will be used.
Daily Operation
Will students need to bring the laptops to school every day?
Yes. Teachers will be using the digital platform to transform teaching and learning.
Will students be using the laptops all day in every class?
Not necessarily, the use will vary according to the class, instructional strategies, and teacher discretion.
Is there a secure area for laptops during lunch, PE, or assemblies?
It is anticipated that students will have their laptops with them. At no time is the laptop to be left unattended. AHS will provide a secure place during PE.
How long does the battery last?
The specs say the 9-cell battery will last up to 10 hours, but it will vary according to use.
What if a battery runs out during the day?
Options for recharging are still under discussion. While they are new, fully charged batteries should last the school day.
What if a student forgets their laptop or it is under repair?
In most instances, they can obtain a loaner.
How will technical support for the computers be handled?
Current technology staff provides support. A helpdesk will provide troubleshooting for basic issues. An additional technician will be hired and HP will provide a technician for 6 months. Online help tutorials and videos are available.
Can students load software to their laptop?
Yes, students in accordance with these rules:
• Can update software and drivers
• Can download music, videos , and books that have appropriate content and comply with copyright laws
• Cannot take up instructional disk space
• May not load anything that is inappropriate or illegal
• Cannot load own filtering, malware , or antivirus software
• Cannot alter installed software
• Cannot impede network performance
• No peer to peer file sharing
