Graduation Requirements

Future Ready Core Course and Credit Requirements Checklist for 9th Grade Students entering in 2009-2010 and later.

Units for graduation from Asheboro High School are counted from the 9th grade forward. Students must successfully complete his/her maximum potential for earning credit over a four year span less four units. Maximum potential is defined as an individual’s opportunity to earn all high school credits available within an academic year. Student may take a maximum of eight subjects each year in grades 9-12, for a total of 32 units in four years.

Course units required for graduation in Grades 9-12:
English 4
Mathematics 4 (two units must be high school Integrated Math I & II)
Social Studies 3 (one unit must be Civics/Economics, one must be U.S. Studies, and one unit must be in World Studies)
Science 3 (one unit must be a physical science, one unit must be Biology, and one unit must be Earth/Environmental)
Health and Physical Education 1
Electives 13 (one unit must be Comet Connection/Freshman Seminar or AVID Elective)
Total 28

Students entering the ninth grade in 2006-2007 and beyond are required to meet new exit standards by attaining an Achievement Level III or above on five end-of-course assessments including:

Algebra I (Algebra I EOC will be administered at the end of Integrated Math II)
Biology
English I
Civics and Economics
U.S. History

A Graduation Project is also required to graduate. A Graduation Project will be completed during the Junior and Senior English classes. It is a four part process, consisting of the following components :

  • A typed/word processed research paper (completed in English III)
  • A physical product related to some aspect of the research paper (completed in English IV)
  • A portfolio documenting the entire process (completed in English IV)
  • An oral presentation which synthesizes the first three components and is given before a review board composed of teachers and community leaders (completed in English IV)

The research paper component of the Graduation Project has been added to English III. This will be an 8-10 page research paper on a topic of their choice, approved by the Graduation Committee. The final paper will count as 35% of the student' final exam grade. It is important to note that the research paper must be completed in English III before students will be placed in Senior English.

Grades will be given for meeting established deadlines and for the careful and thorough completion of the various components of the Graduation Project. To be successful, a Senior must complete and pass all components of the project. The three components completed in the Senior English class will comprise 25% of the grade for 12th grade English.
